The year is 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of a million inhabitants and the epicenter of a vast empire. A republic is founded on the principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, never allowing one man to assume absolute control.

Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) ends a campaign to conquer Gaul that lasted several years. In the process of conquest, he grew rich and honed a deadly army led by the Thirteenth Legion, a group of men ready to obey his every command. Two members of the fighting thirteen, Lucious Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur), are the central characters of the series.

Vorenus is a dedicated soldier and family man. Both the people and Caesar himself respect him. Pullo is an effeminate, drunken outsider. His ruthless fighting skills and rebellious style make him popular. The uneasy relationship between Voren and Pul begins when circumstances force them to work together on a mission of great importance to Caesar.

In Rome, Casesar’s niece Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is an extremely ambitious and cunning player for the Roman nobility. With Servilla, Caesar’s mistress, we have two women who can rival any man in the empire in cunning and ruthlessness. Atia’s son (and future Roman emperor) Octavianus (Max Pirkis, Lord and Commander: The Far Side of the World) is a preternaturally bright teenager with a keen understanding of Roman politics.

Caesar’s main rivals are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey is a Roman co-consul with Caesar. At first, the battle is one of will and wit between Caesar and Pompey. Finally, it’s the turn of the swords. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar is much more complicated. Caesar needs Brutus and his powerful family to legitimize his power, but Brutus is a republican who hates Caesar’s imperial ambitions. Their relationship between father and son is a source of great internal conflict for both.

Caesar’s rise to power and its consequences for Rome are the backdrop against which all the characters’ conflicts take place. Politics, personal rivalries, friendships and some very Oedipal relationships are skilfully combined with historical facts to tell a unique story of Rome during one of its most eventful periods. Rest assured that I have only scratched the surface here. There are many characters and plot twists in this sprawling story that I have left the viewer to discover.
